Leading in the zombie economy
While we have avoided economic disaster, and have now entered into a form of recovery, we must prepare ourselves to live in a world dominated by half-dead, half-alive ‘zombies’ that will prevent any rapid return to business as usual. Leaders must take radical action and reinvent their business models in order to survive.
This is the conclusion of PA’s book The zombie economy: leadership in times of uncertainty. Based on a detailed analysis of the 2009 half-year results for over 600 US and UK companies, the book explores the likely scenarios for the future course of the recession and recovery, and sets out a series of practical recommendations to overcome the challenges of the post-crisis world.
The zombie economy identifies four main zombie types, groups or institutions that, while they have not failed outright, will struggle to support economic growth as they normally would:
-
zombie banks, whose balance sheets are too weak to support sufficient lending
-
zombie governments, whose finances are too stretched to sustain expansionary policies
-
zombie consumers, whose wealth and spending power are too depleted to allow them to consume at normal levels
-
zombie companies, who are saddled with debt that they cannot comfortably service, impeding growth and investment
